To tell Dr. Hurwitz’s gripping saga, Robert Mendelson relied on his experience as an award-winning author, journalist, and editor. His writing career spans nearly three decades, beginning after his collegiate days at Franklin and Marshall College where he majored in English.
His interest in nonfiction developed during his years as a reporter for several newspapers, including the Chicago Sun-Times. After he wrote the narrative-nonfiction book, A Family Divided (promtheus Books), he further gleaned his narrative writing style during his four-year tenure as editor in chief of the University of Pittsburgh’s Pitt Magazine. When he took over the magazine in 2001, it held seven editorial awards in regional, national, and international competitions. When he resigned in late spring 2005 to write The Chase for Beauty, the magazine held 19 awards.
Before bringing Dr. Hurwitz’s story to life, Mr. Mendelson conducted approximately 100 interviews. They were digitally recorded to ensure accuracy. (Most interviews resulted in a 20-30 page transcript.) His thoroughness and attention to detail are evident on every page.
Mr. Mendelson recently became executive editor for the collegiate magazine Carnegie Mellon Today, which he is transforming through his narrative-nonfiction approach.

I truly believe books can change the world, one reader at a time. I want to thank Chris, Christina, and Joey from Branding Brand for understanding what it means to chase beauty and for doing everything they can to help “The Chase for Beauty” find the readership it deserves (including the development of this Web site). They, like Dr. Hurwitz, don’t aspire to mediocrity.
